ProlapLase®

What is it?

Pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a common problem, particularly affecting women after childbirth. This problem happens when the vaginal muscles become relaxed and they lose their natural support. As a result the vaginal diameter can increase with significant stretch of the vaginal walls. Patients can experience unpleasant changes in sexual satisfaction and sometimes a constant pressure sensation.

Before ProlapLase® there were only two solutions available: the use of ring pessaries which are not really suitable for sexually active and younger women, and surgical solutions which have recently been associated with problems.

Using ProlapLase® laser technology is a new approach. The photothermal effect of Er:YAG laser can tighten the tissue and contract the vaginal canal. This effect is achieved by collagen neogenesis and remodelling and synthesis of new collagen. In this way the vaginal canal is remodelled without removing any tissue. This treatment has been shown to be safe and effective in preliminary studies.

Patients can immediately return to normal activities and they do not require hospitalization.

What to expect?

Treatments are simple and quick. No anaesthesia is required, you walk in and walk out and there are no complications or incisions. The procedure is incisionless and painless, with no cutting, bleeding, or downtime. A special handpiece, similar to a speculum as used during a Pap test, is inserted into the vagina. The vaginal region is then treated with subablative laser pulses. No special pre-op preparations or post-op precautions are necessary. You can immediately return to normal everyday activities after the treatment, which takes 15 to 20 minutes and is performed in an outpatient clinic. Your treatment is provided by a sensitive and highly qualified specialist.
