What is Vaginal Atrophy?

Vaginal dryness, painful sex and general vaginal discomfort are very common symptoms in menopause. This problem is caused by the decreased level of oestrogen which causes thinning and degeneration of the vaginal mucosa.

Many women don’t realise what is wrong. They think they might have constant irritation or trush. Some women find smear tests and exams extremely painful.

What can be done?

There are three main things women can do:

LUBRICANTS AND OVER THE COUNTER CREAMS.

They can help making sexual intercourse more comfortable. However they do not resolve the problem as they do not cure vaginal atrophy.

VAGINAL OESTROGENS

They can be very helpful as they treat the source of the problem. Unfortunately it can take a long time to achieve improvement. It is also difficult to have sufficient improvement just with this treatment if the oestrogen levels have been low for a very long time.

LASER

RenovaLase® is a unique and innovative, non-invasive laser therapy for the symptoms of vaginal atrophy. It is based on non-ablative photothermal treatment of the vaginal canal. Clinical studies show that it is an efficient, easy-to-use, quick and safe procedure that can give much quicker results.

Erbium vaginal laser treats the problem at source, unlike vaginal creams and lubricants. It does restore the vaginal mucosa (internal vaginal skin) to a similar premenopausal state which is why some people call it vaginal rejuvenation.

The non ablative technology used with Er:Yag laser is very different from previous treatments (CO2 lasers). There has been some concerns in relation to previous lasers (scarring and pain) but these risks are not associated with the use of Er:Yag laser.

What can I expect?

Treatments are simple and quick. No anaesthesia is required, you walk in and walk out and there are no complications or incisions. The procedure is incisionless and painless, with no cutting, bleeding, or downtime. A special handpiece, similar to a speculum as used during a Pap test, is inserted into the vagina. The vaginal region is then treated with subablative laser pulses. No special pre-op preparations or post-op precautions are necessary. You can immediately return to normal everyday activities after the treatment, which takes 15 to 20 minutes and is performed in an outpatient clinic. Your treatment is provided by a sensitive and highly qualified specialist.
